Today’s New Noise: Tigers in Cairo

Tigers in Cairo

Tigers in Cairo are a very new, self-described post-punk band from San Diego, California. They only just released their first ever single, “Always Adored,” back in September and their second single, “Wavy Eyes,” at the end of October. Both songs are streaming on your favorite music platform and they’re also on Bandcamp and YouTube.

First up, “Always Adored” definitely keeps the “punk” in “post-punk.” There’s artistic flourishes that go outside of what’s traditionally considered punk, sure, but at its heart this is a classic punk song. Perhaps “art punk” or even “post-hardcore” might be a more apt description for this style. But regardless of what you want to call it, it’s a damn good song. With a driving punk rhythm and strong melodies, this is one of those songs that pulls off that perfect balance between power and beauty. There’s a hint of something nostalgic, wistful, and profoundly sad in the lyrics and tone of the song, but the sheer power of the song creates an explosive sense of catharsis. Check out the track below.

Similarly, “Wavy Eyes” is a melodic punk banger with a lot of energy and emotional catharsis. With hints of Militarie Gun and Jawbreaker, it’s got these really haunting moments that really stick with you. With these two killer first singles, I think we’re going to be hearing a lot in the future about Tigers in Cairo. Check out “Wavy Eyes” below.
