tryingtogetby are a unique fusion of ska, punk, and hip-hop. The project just released a new EP called No Time to Waste. It’s streaming right now on their Bandcamp now.
I’ve long said that there needs to be more fusion of punk and hip-hop. It’s just fun. Adding ska into the mix just inevitably makes things better. The title track opens up with some raging guitars and some laid-back ska rapping, but then takes a serious turn towards the end to kick into some high-gear political hip-hop. It’s vital and real, and at the same time catchy and fun. “Burning” is wedged somewhere neatly between the second and third waves of ska and fuses forward into the fourth wave with the rap vocals. Then closing track “A Myth” has nostalgic notes of ’90s ska that perfectly capture the glory days of the ska-punk movement. A gorgeous three-tracker, I’m definitely going to keep an eye on this artist.
