Hello to you all from April 10, which is a federal holiday now because it is my friend Kristin’s birthday. Everyone say “happy birthday, Kristin!” As a form of celebration, Today’s New Noise is untitled freak, the beautifully melancholy solo project of Laveda frontwoman Ali Genevich.
untitled freak recently released their debut EP titled 7 circles via indie label Pleasure Tapes. 7 circles is an exercise in minimalism with Genevich’s sorrowful vocals taking center stage over stripped-down shoegaze guitar and restrained drumming. Lead single “hammerhead shark,” featuring Retail Drugs, embraces the “sadcore” aesthetic most clearly, opening with the line “Everyone wants to die someday / You know what’s wrong.” The rest of the track is a slow-burn self-examination that Genevich says is “the pinnacle of my stream of consciousness writing style … partly a statement of what I value in relationships and also a reflection of my immediate life.”
untitled freak will be performing live in New York City on Sunday, April 26 alongside Sara Devoe, Bug Crush, and Laura Elliott. Tickets can be purchased here.
