Time & The Bell are the dream pop project of Mandy Morgan, who you may know from Nasalrod, General Electric, and as the woman behind Nadine Records and Allisa Beymer of Sukey Tawdry. The two longtime friends and one-time lovers have been playing music together for half their lives and now have a new record out.
Over ten years in the making, O Solferino is the duo’s debut full-length, which comes out October 16 on Nadine Records. They describe the album as “encapsulate[ing] much love, loss, growth and healing.” This includes illness, death, and birth, as well as a house fire that burned down the basement studio where they tracked most of their songs.
Although the studio was completely destroyed, no one was hurt, and an external hard drive containing all of their songs was eventually recovered. Time & the Bell later linked up with engineer and producer Adam Lee (Built To Spill, Portugal. The Man, Decemberists) to help polish up the tracks and get them ready for prime time.
The result is an indie-folk album that mixes influences like Elliott Smith, the Everly Brothers, Björk, Cocteau Twins, and more. Many guest musicians lent their cello, french horn, harpsichord, and theorbo skills to some of the more intricately lush and orchestral pieces on O Solferino, displaying an album that seamlessly flows from stripped-down acoustic songs to chamber pop opuses.
Today, New Noise are delighted to premiere for you one of the songs off of O Solferino called “Some Song,” which you can stream below:
For a little background on the new song, Mandy had the following to say:
“I wrote Some Song while Allisa and I were living at Phantom Ranch, in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It’s about the dissolution of a relationship as well as an allegiance to alcohol and the attempts we make to escape ourselves and each other.”
