Turnpike Gates is Philadelphia-bred, Jersey City-based songwriter Ryan Smith, who will release City In Heat, out July 2 via Generation Pressed Records, a 5-song EP produced by Pete Steinkopf (The Bouncing Souls, Beach Rats) at Little Eden in Asbury Park, NJ.
On “Seasick,” the EP’s debut single, Turnpike Gates reflects on the increasingly difficult challenge of living in an American city in the 21st century.
New Noise are proud to premiere “Seasick” below:
“Seasick” is the first single from City In Heat, featuring a talented cast of musicians: Steinkopf, who lends his extraordinary guitar talents to two songs; Jared Hart (Mercy Union, The Scandals) and Zak Ferentz (Felons), who provide backing vocals; Jimmy Walsh (Rest Easy, Shook Ones), who provides drums; Armand Gersbach (Stellarbelly), who provides bass; and Jenn Fantaccione (The Bouncing Souls, The Front Bottoms), who provides cello and violin. Kristin Hutchinson also provided piano on the track “Seasick.”
City In Heat, which was mastered by Paul Miner at BuzzBomb Studios in Orange, California, and is the follow-up to Turnpike Gates’ debut record, self-released at the end of 2018.
On the meaning behind the track, Smith states:
“Little Eden is a special place. Getting the opportunity to work with Pete and make this record there with my friends was an emotional experience, and I think that comes through on ‘Seasick’ maybe more than any other song. Although I wrote the large majority of it prior to the pandemic, I think it feels like a song that’s made for this moment in time.”
