Toronto, Canada hardcore band Cold Shoulder are sharing their new video, “Misery,” premiering exclusively here at New Noise.
The band formed in 2016, and since, they have unleashed three releases: their T.O.H.C. EP in 2016, their Self War LP in 2017, followed by their Backlash EP. By 2018, Cold Shoulder complete multiple coast-to-coast tours, played as part of large festivals like the Vans Warped Tour in Toronto; Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Flyover Fest; and Snow & Flurry Fest in Fargo, North Dakota.
The band’s sound is best described as a blend of metallic hardcore, with influences from early-to-mid 2000s Canadian hardcore bands like No Warning and Comeback Kid and East Coast hardcore names like Advent, Incendiary, and Converge.
Today, Cold Shoulder have found a new home with New Age Records, gearing up to drop their second full-length album, Primal Fury, with 10 tracks laced with rage and, of course, fury. Looking forward, the band are eager to expand upon their foothold in the hardcore scene to embrace even more tours and larger shows.
Cold Shoulder’s Geoff Ellman talks more about the new track:
“At its core, Cold Shoulder is an amalgamation of youth crew energy and metallic heaviness. This song is one of the more straight-forward punk rock bangers on the album. The simple but explosive riffs were inspired by our friends and former label-mates, the great Time and Pressure. We definitely wrote this song with stage-dives in mind. Lyrically, the song was written with the nihilistic framework of being miserable knowing that life often throws the worst at you and nothing matters; life is really short, and we’ll all be dead soon.
“We made the video back in the summer while we patiently awaited the return of local hardcore shows. We wanted to create something fun to fill that void of not being able to play live during the pandemic. We gathered a combination of live footage and us just hanging out, skateboarding, having fun, etc. We also shot some scenes of the four of us prowling the graffiti-soaked back alleys of Toronto. The editing is colorful, fast-paced, and a bit chaotic, just like a Cold Shoulder set. It sums up our current attitude and aesthetic as we prepare to come out of hibernation and unleash all our pent up energy on stage once again.”
