“‘Please Don’t Tell’ doesn’t have a lot of lyrics. It’s basically a prayer. There’s only one direct theme, and that’s dishonesty in a relationship. But the song isn’t really about anything specific. It’s more of a feeling. I wrote it shortly after a friend of mine passed away from a drug overdose. ‘Please Don’t Tell’ is actually the name of a bar in the East Village [of Brooklyn], somewhere we hung out together. So the song came out of those feelings, along with my experience in a troubled relationship.

We gave the acoustic version a different flavor from the record. We locked into a hip hop/soul groove, very different from the swampy rock feel we laid down in the studio. We grew up playing a lot of groove music, and it’s fun to work in some of that influence. Reimagining songs and their arrangements is a great exercise. You can take the same tune and do it in almost any style – reggae, electro, metal – it’s simply the way you choose to dress up the song, so it’s fun to hear what it’s like with a different outfit on.”
