Nashville-based heavy duo Friendship Commanders are back with their new single and video, “Altar,” which explores the issue of living in a dangerous state of constant comparison and competition and existing in a culture still largely run and dominated by white, cisgender men.
The track continues some of the messaging the duo—vocalist/guitarist Buick Audra, and drummer/bassist Jerry Roe—embraced in their 2020 EP, Hold On To Yourself, with the chorus warning listeners about being reduced to just one of many.
Songwriter Buick Audra expands on “Altar:
“It takes a toll on my mental health, the amount of comparison and competitiveness that now exists because of social media and streaming platform numbers, and that’s all on top of what has always existed: the idea that none of us are enough, that we constantly have to be in a state of impressing someone. And who is that someone? Some dude in an office who rates you on size, shape, and age, and calls it a day? Hard pass. That life almost stripped me of myself years ago; I’m deeply protective of who I am and what I make now, and I think we all should be. Let’s stop offering ourselves up to be rated.”
Friendship Commanders will also be touring in November before they set off to finish their third LP in December. The full list of dates are below:
