Alt-rockers Megawave recently dropped their genre-bending album, Rainbow Heartache. Following the album’s launch, the New York trio are releasing the video for “Sozin’s Comet,” a high-energy single that reflects on the redemption arc in Avatar the Last Airbender for the antagonist-turned-hero, Zuko.

While ostensibly a song about a cartoon, “Sozin’s Comet” hints at the state of the world, namely the United States, and it asks the listener to redirect their rage into helping others and changing the course of history. Both Avatar and the Rage Against the Machine song “Sleep Now in the Fire” influenced its creation.

Rainbow Heartache has a wide range of influences, from binge-watching and enjoying the soundtracks of Avatar the Last Airbender, Sailor Moon, and Steven Universe as well as a range of artists including artists that one might not put in the same sentence, including, Blondie, GROUPLOVE, Just Friends, Tape Girl, Coheed and Cambria, Dance Gavin Dance, and We are the Union. The album is the band’s fourth release, growing side-by-side with their producer, Nicholas Starrantino (Stolas, Pollyanna) at Westfall Recording Company in Farmingdale NY.

The nine-track LP covers personal growth for the band members, Michi Turk (vocals/keyboards), Mike DiGiulio (guitar/bass), and Mike McCarthy (drums). In January 2020, Michi received a diagnosis of multiple neuro-divergence as well as an autoimmune illness, which had a great impact on their personal relationships and is reflected in their lyrics.

On the album’s release, Turk states:

“The album is called Rainbow Heartache with the reminder that both pain and hope are ongoing and unavoidable. The songs are about pain and anger but also about growth and acceptance.”

DiGiulio adds:

“With this record being our first full-length, we aimed to create a diverse yet cohesive sound that captured the essence of who we really are as a band. Our producer Nick Starrintino did an incredible job culminating the many influences, genres, and moods on ‘Rainbow Heartache’ into a uniform album that flows well together. Now that it’s out, it’s amazing to see the different aspects of the album that people enjoy and which songs they connect with the most.”
