Video Premiere: Nightwell – ‘Tragic’

Nightwell

Toronto, four-piece rock group Nightwell are sharing their new track and video “Tragic.”

The song focuses on trying to push past a similar cycle creatively, the rush of passion that comes out when it’s late and you’re on a roll, and the energy one gets displacing the need for sleep.

It’s from the band’s new, three-song EP, What You Feel, which adds more R & B and hip-hop elements to their pop punk. Nightwell—comprised of Jason Emsallam (vocals), Cole Hardy (guitars), Terrance Pettitt (drums), and Kyle Marchant (guitar and production)—previously released their self-titled debut album last year, and the new EP also includes recent releases “Hate Me” and “Thank You.”

“This song is for anyone in any creative industry trying to push themselves forward. The music industry has amazing highs and extreme lows (in my experience as a musician and a producer). But, if you keep pushing yourself forward and growing, it will all be worth it!” Marchant says. “’Tragic,’ like the other songs on the EP, was written altogether in a room. We had a few different vibe ideas we were going through, but the whole song really came together from the drum groove in the first verse. The bridge is also a rework of a really old Nightwell song, maybe some O.G. fans will recognize it!”

“‘Tragic’ reflects my creative process in a way where there’s a fine line between my anxiety putting me under stress and motivating me to work harder,” Emsallam adds. “It encompasses how hard I’ve worked towards my goals and confidently describes how I feel when it comes to writing music. The chorus shows how my desperation to create music has often left me anxious, questioning whether my writing has been productive or if there’s something holding me back from success.

“The resolution within the lyrics is about realizing that even though it often feels like we’re being hindered by small things such as traffic—randomly speeding up or slowing us down—none of the small steps that we take to progressing should be taken for granted; they all amount to the bigger picture of who we are becoming. These things take time.”
