Romy is back with a new, four-song EP, Cosm, full of dark, driving electronic music, and ahead of the release, she is sharing the lead single and video, “Penance.”
The song calls back to other electronic/industrial icons, like NIN’s Pretty Hate Machine era, surrounded in hard-hitting drums and a seance of sequencers, building to the chorus driven by pounding bass, emotive guitars, and Romy’s vocal pleas. “Penance” acts as a prayer for mercy, begging the world to be more gentle and challenging the listener to be more forgiving of themselves, too.
The other tracks also deliver a collection of sounds and themes, often calling out to eras of the past while still fully encapsulating Romy’s signature sound.
Romy expands on the EP and its themes: “Cosm is about immersive mercy. There are no mirrors in cyberspace; there are only cameras. The mirror is an analog angel compared to the tyranny of the digital. Nature is in our nature. Cosm is a reflection on reflections. Peace, love and darkness.”
