Royalty Kult are an alternative metal project with influences from hard rock and new wave to nu-metal, but always with melody as the central force. Josh Michael and David Fulford-Brown have been making music together since 2009, originally under the name Interim Divine.

In 2016, they changed their name and finally announced Royalty Kult to the world in 2020 with their debut album, Enjoying The End.

What was the inspiration for the song? Why The Postal Service cover?

David’s favorite song off of The Postal Service’s 2003 debut album Give Up is “This Place Is a Prison” because of its dark contrast to the rest of the record. David always had the vision to bring it to life in a different direction. Josh had never heard the song until Dave showed it to him on acoustic and Josh never listened to the actual version till after he had recorded his vocals so that he could make it his own.

What was the idea behind the video?

We wanted a lighter feel compared to our prior video to fit the alternative vibe of the song. We thought it would be cool to pay homage to historic filming locations as well, so the performance scenes were filmed at various filming locations in Los Angeles including 1982’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, 1991’s Point Break and 1985’s Back To The Future.

What was the process of making the video like?

It was a whole day of filming throughout Los Angeles going to historic filming locations. It’s the second installment of a trilogy of videos we shot with director Ron Thunderwood (Opiate For The Masses, 9ELECTRIC).

What can your fans expect at your debut show at the Whisky on September 24th?

The Whisky show with Soulfly is our debut and means the world to us. Everyone can expect for us to leave it all on the stage that night and solidify ourselves for many years to come. It’s an honor to have this opportunity and we are truly grateful.

Is there anything else you would like to promote?

Our third video in the trilogy with Ron Thunderwood is also off of our debut album, Enjoying The End, and should be released sometime in winter 2021. Also, expect new music from us in 2022!
