Video Premiere: The Acharis – ‘Jesus Thrill’

Acharis

Oakland, CA-based The Acharis are preparing for their upcoming, new album, Blue Sky / Grey Heaven, and ahead of the release, they are sharing the first music video from the LP, “Jesus Thrill.”

The video compiles a montage of footage from the San Francisco Film Archive “Prelinger Archives,” which offers historical and original film footage for public use. The video shows women in private settings, on vacation, at home, celebrating, dancing, socializing, and more, adding a person, home-movie style contributing to the intimate atmosphere the music video looks to create.

The Acharis singer/songwriter and creator of the “Jesus Thrills” music video, Mila, chats more about the track and video:

“Some of the songs I’ve written are dedicated to a specific memory, and then others—like ‘Jesus Thrill’—kind of just emerge. Maybe it’s more like a conjuring, since it feels like most of these songs are written out of emotional necessity. For me, making music organizes the confusion of feelings that would otherwise be inexplicable. I am a visually thinker, and during the writing process, I often see visuals right from the start. As an artist who struggles with words, I try to communicate in other ways as much as possible.

“The video for ‘Jesus Thrill’ illuminates a hidden side of the song, and together they are able to convey my intentions better than the song alone,” Mila says.

“I hear a message that we can’t be broken easily, about cycles of life and how others who came before us fell victim to a trajectory of limitations, yet they carried dreams and paved the road for us nonetheless,” she adds. “Currently, I am thinking about the creative powers of the female body and how laws inspired by religious fascism are trying to dominate it. To me, what is wild is the most godly and is not to be controlled. It is one with nature. The female body is going to shape shift. It is not going to be erased. The chant in ‘Jesus Thrill’ is reminding me of that force that we have inside.”
