Video Premiere: Vast Asteroid – “Drown”

Vast Asteroid

New Noise Magazine is feeling amped on this video premiere for “Drown” by Vast Asteroid. The shoegaze track is a wonderful swirl of a crafty pop song mixed with swirling dynamics. The guitar leads are bright, rich with a light distortion that are cut through by the powerful vocals. The vocal presence is a highlight of the tune, really soaring over the hazy textures, which finds the listener enriched with plenty of soaring melodies. Take a view of the video below, and be prepared for their upcoming self-titled record, out on TBMR Records.

“‘Drown’ is the biggest fusion of opposites on the record. Blatant hooks, funky structure. Alien lyrics, familiar emotional terrain. Poppiest song in some ways, sludgiest in others. The title is taken from the bridge. A cherry ring pop you dropped in the parking lot. Alice In Chains goes to Hot Topic. I like all these things about this song very much.

It pretty much came into being fully formed as a musical idea, and I was terrified I’d mess it up and lose the magic in the studio. Fortunately Mark and Mimi made that impossible. And Dave Catching handed me the perfect old Tele to nail the rhythm guitar. Lick, lick, crunch.” – James Poulos (guitar/vocals)

“We decided to shoot a video for ‘Drown’, trying to bring out or add another feel for the particular song. We set everything up and shot it kind of spontaneously. I could tell from the first couple shots what that feel was going to be and I went with it, everything was mellow and good fun. I like the closeness of it, and I think the visuals worked well with it, which is what we wanted since we really liked the song to begin with. Editing it afterwards was pretty straight forward, definitely a lot brighter than we’re used to.” – Dora Stergiou (video director)

Hailing from Los Angeles, Vast Asteroid is a supergroup of sorts, made up of The Warlocks former bassist Mimi Star, seminal Mancunian punk-rock band Slaughter And The Dogs drummer Mark Reback and singer and guitarist James Poulos. The album also features the likes of Dave Catching (Eagles Of Death Metal) as a special guest.

Their debut album (S/t), which was released in digital formats last November, earned rave reviews and attracted the attention of Athens-based Thinkbabymusic Records, leading to a deluxe gatefold vinyl edition, out next 30th May.
The album has been pressed in 180-gram heavyweight black vinyl, and comes with a free download code which includes two bonus, previously unheard / unreleased tracks from the band.

The band has developed a unique blend of shoegaze, space rock, desert rock, grunge and britpop, and they dubbed it ‘Spacegaze’, which is also the title of the last track on the album, featuring the likes of Dave Catching (Eagles Of Death Metal) on additional guitar madness.

Vast Asteroid is set to play a release show for the deluxe edition on 30th May at Harvard & Stone in Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA
