We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of VUM’s new music video for their song “Red Flag” (watch it below). The track is taken from the band’s album Cryptocrystalline, available now on limited edition, hand-numbered vinyl or digitally through Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon. You can also purchase the album on cassette through Tapes from the Gates.
The band comments on the video & its meaning:
“‘Red Flag’ is a travelogue of sorts – it is a collage of daily life scenes shot on Super 8 film in Denmark, Finland, Russia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The ‘red flag’ referred to in the song is the foreboding portent of war and the otherwise mundane scenes mark the eve of an imagined (or real?) war. The lyrical phrase ‘this time I close my eyes, it’s golden’ describes the turn inwards towards bliss – the only way to escape the non-stop, external chaos of our evolving/devolving world. Andreas Attai directed, shot, edited, and produced the film for us.”
Duo Jennifer Pearl and Chris Badger wrote, rehearsed and recorded their first work in their Topanga Canyon studio apartment – the same four walls where Neil Young recorded After The Goldrush. Their initial album, Night Sun, debuted on Henry Rollins’ KCRW radio show, beginning a long-term musical exchange with the DJ and his “fanatics.” Described as “noirishly psychedelic” by W Magazine, VUM create post-punk, coldwave inspired sounds in a place known more for country rock and peyote-chewing hippies. Equal parts California psych flourishes and minimalist rhythms, VUM continues to write and record in their small, Canyon cabin.
