Video Premiere: In The Whale – “American Eyes”

We are happy to premiere the newest single from Denver band In The Whale. Their new single, “American Eyes,” is off of their upcoming EP Quicksand which will be released October 21st. Read what the band had to say about their upcoming EP, their new single and a few other answers to questions in this exclusive stream and interview and make sure to catch the band on tour this fall.

In The Whale had this to say about their single, “The song is about how people can sometimes do and support things that are in opposition of what’s actually in their best interest. Lyrically it speaks to the idea of patriotism, but it also speaks to the whole spectrum of American life. Everyday the media bombards us with a million different ideas. It can sometimes be really easy to mistake propaganda for truth. That’s the overall idea of Quicksand, that you get caught up in the craziness of the whole thing, and you can’t decipher left from right, up from down, right from wrong.”

With this being said, the band pursued to make sure they were not in any quicksand themselves, stating “Our producer Bill Stevenson (The Descendents) really pushed us, and challenged us to put forth our absolute best work on this one. More than any producer has in the past. We think you can hear that in the performances on the record. Also, it’s definitely the most “mature” recording we’ve done lyrically, but it’s still In The Whale. It’s still a big, raw, and aggressive rock record.”

Pre-Order Quicksand here.

“American Eyes” reminds me of the older punk days – like Autopilot Off – did you guys go into writing the tune with any preconceived ideas of how it would sound? Or did you stick to your usual formula?

Nate wrote the bare bones of the song on an acoustic guitar a few years back, actually. When we were working on ideas for songs for the record, he threw that in the hat, and we both agreed that it was a really strong chorus. From there, we explored and worked out the rest of the song. We weren’t going for a particular type of sound, it really just sort of came naturally.

How has living in Denver been in regards to the growth of In The Whale?

Denver has been amazing for the growth of the band. We have a super solid core group of die hard fans here, so it’s nice to be able to come home from the road and play to a large crowd that gets rowdy and sings the words and buys merchandise. We feel very fortunate to have fans that like the music enough to support us in that way.

What is up next for In The Whale?

Once this record is out, we’re doing a few little tours around the US, then in February 2017, we’re headed to Europe for a three week tour. For years, people have been telling us that they would love us in Europe, so we’re going down there for the first time to test the waters out. We’re super excited!

This year has been flooded with so many great releases, anything you have been listening to?

Really excited for the new Every Time I Die album coming out this week, loving the new Against Me, and our friends in the band Purple released an album called Bodacious this year that we’re in love with.
