Video Premiere: Whale Bones – “Backyard”

Whale Bones

New Noise Magazine is extremely excited to be bringing forth the music video premiere for “Backyard” by Whale Bones. The Bloomington, Indiana three piece is bold with their approach to pop-punk, roughing out the edges with staggering melodies and hooks. “Backyard” tells a bit of a different tale with its soundscape however, utilizing a bright acoustic guitar with notes creating a turnstile of introspection. The middle of the song finds the band attacking the more aggressive tendencies, still allowing for the reflective tone to breathe with a bit more distortion and a rolling drum pattern. Whale Bones are looking forward to the release of their full length, Island Fire, out March 23rd. The record was produced, mixed and recorded by the band’s very own Nathan Kane, giving the record a made at home and special feel. Expect more infectiously catchy Whale Bones songs like the one below in the near future.

“I was inspired by Terrence Malick’s movie ‘To the Wonder’ and how he was able to make very human experiences feel so tender and intimate. The song and the video both stem from the emotion that I feel when watching that movie. The song itself is a more hopeful perspective than the usual Whale Bones song, but I think it still gives an accurate representation of the sound and message. It’s about holding out for the true goodness in the world and not allowing yourself to give into your own negativity and defeat. We worked with Joe Etemadi to make the video, and I’m incredibly happy with how everything was executed. We shot everything over the course of three days at different locations across Indiana.” – Nathan Kane
