NYC-based singer-songwriter AJ Smith has released his most recent single in a line of sinfully catchy tracks, along with a video, the smooth and aptly named, “Cooler.”
The new song has Smith promising a girlfriend that, if she gives him a second chance, he will calm the jitters and come back smoother than he did on the first try. Each of his singles have worked to add more depth and dimension to Smith’s personality and artistry.
In Smith’s approach to music, it’s clear he has a love for pop music, his own unique way of arranging music, and a clear intent to add some drama to the narrative of his music. He previously dedicated a single to Billy Joel, making his aesthetic and allegiances clear: He believes in the classic hook, the perfect tune, a shameless sing-along chorus, and ultimately singles that can’t escape your head.
The new video shows AJ Smith in his entirety, as both a smoother rocker commanding his band and the camera, along with the nerdy sweetheart whose insecurity interrupts his true intentions. It’s set at a drive-in movie theater, and while the era in time is unclear, it doesn’t seem to matter, as Smith intentionally explores a subject that makes the period less relevant.
