Dwight + Nicole released the music video for “The Next Go Round” last year, and you can check it out here at New Noise.
The band notes that “blues-rock” is a redundant term, as there is no rock without blues, and no country, hip-hop, jazz, or soul either. Dwight + Nicole draw on blues because they know there is no better way to communicate emotion and pull listeners into the song without the fierceness and conviction their subject matter demands.
“The Next Go-Round” is no exception, epitomizing American roots rock at its most creative and unvarnished. Dwight Ritcher’s guitars wrap around Nicole Nelson’s voice and feel like a single expression of the same longing and unrequited desire. It’s a classic blues sound delivered with a certain rock muscle and the sweetness of gospel and soul.
The single builds upon their regional notoriety, boasting their acclaimed debut EP, Electric Lights, wins at the Boston and New England Music Awards, along with dazzling audiences all over the Northeast. “The Next Go Round” was initially meant to take Dwight + Nicole’s sound nationwide, though the pandemic put the brakes on that ambition for a while. That didn’t stop them from sharing the song with the masses, though.
The video stars its director, Jim DanDee, who shares Dwight + Nicole’s deep understanding of the meaning of the blues. It underscores the song’s tough-minded themes, exploring the pain that accompanies emotional distance and the difficulty of finding a sustainable partnership. For DanDee’s character, time is simply moving too fast. He stops to give hugs in the wake of a party in his apartment, and the footage accelerates, leaving nothing but vapor trails where his friends were. Abandoned, with nothing and no one around to break his fall, he resorts to destructive behavior.
