Video Spotlight: Steve J. Allen – ‘Other World’

Steve J. Allen

Steve J. Allen’s upcoming, new album Contrast retains the intensity in his sound with a more varied expression, and that reigns true with his trippy new single and video, “Other World.”

Allen’s debut Wreck The Place established his sound as more punk-adjacent, with a relentless energy that hardly lets up throughout the record’s entirety. The new track is built on an acoustic, six-string melody which is seemingly simple until the listener examines it a bit closer, unearthing the underlying menace and creeping feeling present throughout the track.

The video for “Other World” hones on in the song’s focus on time, featuring plentiful clocks acting as a reminder that we are all hurtling into the future at the same rate, alongside a force we cannot control.  Allen joined forces with the award-winning filmmaker Marwah Ghazi in Southeast Asia to collaborate on the hallucinogenic images that go along with the track.

Allen himself is portrayed as a mage of sorts, riding the wave of time, and the storyteller, guiding a friend through a troubled state, eventually helping to open the shades and dispel the ghosts and darkness as the light of day pours in.
