Album Premiere: Køde – ‘The Best We Can’

After the release of their debut LP, 2019’s Discrete Transformation, the members of Switzerland’s Køde made the most of the pandemic’s limbo by locking themselves into their favorite basement to produce their new EP, The Best We Can, out November 5 through Division Records.

Built upon a solid basis and in constant progression since their first album, a new kind of energy reveals itself in the band’s heart and soul. Still consisting of the same musicians, Saskia (vocals/guitar/synth), Adam (guitar/synth), Alex (bass), and Sylvain (drums), the band blends tender violence and ambient daydream, without forgetting its origins that smell like old punk basements and cold ashes, giving it its best.

The Best We Can was recorded in April 2021 by Sebastien Tavel and Adam St-Roch in Gland, Switzerland, with mixing by Julien Fehlmann at Studio Mécanique, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and mastering by Amy Dragon at Telegraph Mastering, Portland, USA.

On the EP’s forthcoming release, the band states:

“Modest in its number of tracks, this production is nonetheless solid and efficient. Once again thrown through Julien Fehlmann’s mixer, The Best We Can takes us through shoegaze (“Care,” “The Best We Can”) and the math rock (“This Smile”) path, without forgetting to remind us with a quick and simple slap (“Welcome In My Place”), that this EP knows how to stay casual without being too light.”
