Bandcamp of the Day: It’s Bandcamp Friday!

Bandcamp Friday

Whatup, rockers? It’s Bandcamp Friday! What is Bandcamp Friday, you ask? Bandcamp Friday is the first Friday of every month where Bandcamp waives their normal fee so that more money goes directly to the artist. That means it’s the best day of the month for you to support independent artists. Here’s just a small sampling of some of the artists you can support today when your money goes even farther.

Gob Psychic

Gob Psychic are a garage punk band from Aarhus, Denmark. They put out their self-titled debut EP early last month on two French labels, Beast and Le Cépe Records. It’s streaming on the Le Cépe Records Bandcamp, where you can also order the album on vinyl.

Opening track “Harnessed Energy” has a drunken swagger to the vocals that play confidently over the jangly yet aggressive guitars. Then “Respect for Authorities” pulls out a riff that could have been ripped from a late-’70’s British punk tune. “A Day at the Office” has a bit of a surfy feel to it that’s made a bit more punky by the blown out guitars, with vocals that sound reminiscent of The Buzzcock’s late frontman Pete Shelley. “Private Beach” is just a driving punk song with a deceptively simple yet utterly infectious guitar riff. “Dole Office, Inc.” finished off the EP with another surfy tune, this one standing out due to the use of synths. If you like your punk dirty and sloppy, as it should be, you’ll really appreciate this record.

Rosa Faenskap

Rosa Faenskap ire a post black metal trio from Oslo, Norway. Their new album, Jeg Blir Til Deg (I’ll Stay With You), is out today, and you can stream it on their Bandcamp where you can also order the album on vinyl.

“Livredd (Terrified)” opens the record with fuzzy guitars that could almost be mistaken for punk if not for the harsh, black metal style vocals. It’s certainly a track that evokes the emotion of terror, but yet there’s a hopeful tone that runs throughout the song. “Skjør (Fragile)” then comes in with its furious drums and onslaught of guitars that is more steeped in traditional black metal, as the vocals are some how scratchy and deeply echoing at the same time.

“Aldri (Never)” is a nearly 10-minute epic that moves from delicate finger picking to a full metal assault with blast beats. Then it moves back into a quiet, delicate mode about halfway through the song and then finishing on big, grungy chords and some gorgeous melodies. “Paradis (Paradise)” then takes the powerful black metal and puts a solid groove into the beat, creating something, dare I say…catchy? It’s not necessarily what you would think of when you think of black metal, but I suppose that’s the “post” in post black metal. It’s truly a unique record.

Linda’s Mistake

Linda’s Mistake are a classic-style punk rock band out of New York. They put out a new album over the summer called Lumberjack Love, and it’s streaming right now on their Bandcamp, where you can also order it on vinyl or CD.

The record is almost exclusively made up of tracks that clock in at one minute or less. “Brad Pitt is Still Very Handsome” is a goofy and good-spirited punk track. Then “Hey, You’re a Pirate” speeds up the classic hardcore while still keeping that silly sense of fun. “Blossom Sucks” is a very simple diss track regarding the classic ’90’s sitcom Blossom that gets to the heart of punk rock humor.

“Too Legit for the Pit” has a really fun bassline and some breakneck hardcore drumming with gang vocals that almost approach an oi style. “Vampire Baby” uses some synthesizers for a sort of darkwave intro before quickly going back to some Descendents-style pop-hardcore. “The Last of the Modrikins” is a boisterous drinking song with a furious pace that makes for a fun sing-along. The record ends on its longest track, the Rancid-inspired “Giuseppe Franco” which really plays up the gang vocals on the chorus to make for a barroom tune. It’s silly, fun punk at its absolute finest!

Peine Kapital

Peine Kapital are a doom-sludge three-piece out of Strasbourg, France. They recently put out their self-titled debut album which is streaming right now on their Bandcamp.

The 45-minute album is divided into only four tracks, making it more of a single piece with four movements than a collection of individual songs. The album opens on “Ordure Alpha” with its scattered, spoken vocals before the devastatingly distorted guitars come in with typical sludge speed and the bone-breaking basslines perfectly compliment the growling, snarling vocals.

Penultimate track “Uniformol” is the album’s slowest, most deliberately sludgey track that feels like running through quicksand during a rumbling earthquake. “Demain Charogne” finishes out the album with 12 minutes of droning riffs that could shatter diamonds with their distortion and deep bass lines. It’s a powerful doom collection for any true fan of the genre.
