Los Angeles emo/post-hardcore supergroup Car Underwater have rolled out the list of their 10 best metalcore bands. Along with the list, the band members have also come up with their own explanation why they like them so much. Check out the list and comments from the bandmates below:

Disembodied

Max: Seen this band a handful of times and it was always crazy and inspiring. I was, like, 16, and the energy and chaos is what got me.

Underoath

Zach: The overall sound on Define The Great Line is sonically so aggressive without ever being too much. The songwriting keeps you engaged from start to finish. Aaron’s drumming throughout really changed the way I approached the drums.

From First To Last

Max: I would obsess over this band and any live video I could find. So much energy on stage and insane vocal performances on record. Drum parts were always on another level. “Dear Diary” is basically embedded into my musical DNA. Sometimes I’ll be riffing a melody on a new song and will be like, “Oh damn, that’s already FFTL,” Also completely crazy that Lotus is the new singer. Couldn’t be more hyped for our friend. Dream shit.

Chiodos

Sonny: Insane time signatures, good lyrical song writing, and they have one of the best guitar players, Jason Hale.

Hawthorne Heights

Max: I had the deluxe version of The Silence In Black And White when I was 13. Rinse and repeat. “Niki FM” (is) a perfect track. Pretty vivid memory of getting beat up in junior high and bleeding on the baby blue “Ohio Is For Lovers” tee. I saw them on the Never Sleep Again tour at House Of Blues, and it honestly changed my life. This band made it feel like you could just start a band with your friends and do it.

Thursday

Undisclosed member: The older kid on the block who we called Angus put me onto this band when I was 13. This was the first band where the lyrics really made me think.

The band: Bird logo goes crazy. Overall emotion and songwriting were clearly on another level. All-time band for a lot of us.

Senses Fail

Max: “Buried a Lie” was on repeat for about a decade for me. Let It Enfold You has so many good tracks. Huge fan of Buddy’s voice and the desperation you felt in the scream parts like on “Bite To Break Skin.”

Funeral For A Friend

Darcy: This band was always huge for me. The first two records are perfect, the blend anthemic hooks with more technical metalcore riffs so well. Nearly everything I know about playing guitar, I learned from this band.

Misery Signals

Sonny: Can’t do this list without including one of the best. Guitar parts have shaped my playing and love for guitar. This band makes you feel something every time. I got “Fail Safe” tattooed on my knuckles. Ink keeps falling out, though.

Norma Jean

Darcy: One of the heaviest bands of all time to me. The first two records basically paved the way for the following decade of dissonant metalcore, but “Redeemer” has some of the tightest songwriting within the entire sound. “No Passenger: No Parasite” is in my top 10 of all time.
