Like a spirit from the past, Black lips have dreamed up an eerie resemblance to The Velvet Underground on their cover of “Get It On Time.” It’s a magnificent imagining of an artifact once lost to the annals of music history.
Black Lips drummer Oakley Munson unearthed “Get It On Time,” an unfinished Velvets track some have guessed to be an outtake from The Velvet Underground And Nico, and helped to finish off the writing. The band’s rendition appeared on their album Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart, released in January of this year on Fire Records.
Black Lips’ version is startlingly similar to The Velvet Underground’s late ’60s sound. Zumi Rosow, an actress and Gucci model who joined Black Lips in 2013, plays an ethereal Nico while almost spot on plaintive but love-lorn guitars could conjure the ghost of Lou Reed.
The video, directed by David Black, makes a fitting statement using 16mm film and repurposed equipment from a television studio previously owned by televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. The video splits it’s time between documentary footage of Black Lips recording and performative shots of Rosow in what could be a classic-era MTV music video with a set designed by Jeff Koons.
