One way to measure a song’s impact is to feel its viscerality course through you as it works its way northward from the loins to the brain. And when three men dressed in cut-rate quality suits heavily reminiscent of the titty-shaker-era lounge regalia Vegas strip-joint house bands do repeat a one-line mantra to the listener to cause a ruckus in the most blunt of terms, it’s a subliminal command more than a suggestion.
With a new album out this month that marks their 40th anniversary, veteran Swiss trash punks The Monsters release their latest single, a dose of musical MK Ultra titled “Fuck Shit Up,” which surely encapsulates various global attitudes, no matter the school of thought. The Monsters frontman Beat-Man has this to say about the track.
“When I wrote ‘Fuck Shit Up,’ it was a word game that floated around my head for a while. The idea was to make a brutal hardcore song out of it, fast and nasty, but it ended up going into more of a grunge direction. While in the studio with Robert [Butler], we talked about the movie Finding Nemo, and there are those super annoying seagulls always saying, “Mine! Mine! Mine!” throughout the movie. I thought of having the song go in that direction, just be super annoying in itself. So, I asked Janosh how long he could say fuck fuck fuck fuck for, and we were impressed with how long he was able to say it given how much he smokes! So we cut the track with this sing-along, all of us saying fuck fuck fuck throughout. More fuck is better than less fuck, right? So we drove it over the top, and if the song gets banned, then whatever. We’re living in a world with small-dick big leaders and their sycophants believing they can control us and whatever they want regardless, but no fucking way! We’re gonna fuck shit up before they can take everything away from us, and create something fresh again.”
Their new album Off The Road We Go! Will be released on their longtime home, Voodoo Rhythm Records, on October 16th and marks the band’s 10th album. For forty years, The Monsters have toured the planet, playing the continents and different cultures few rock n’ roll lifers get the chance to experience, and show no signs of slowing down, with European tour dates already booked in support, kicking off with an appearance at this year’s Funtastic Dracula Carnival in Spain alongside rock n’roll pillars like Thee Headcotes, The Untamed Youth, and Pat Todd & The Rankoutsiders, with the new blood in Twenty One Children, The Sleevens, Split System, and more.
Off The Road We Go! Is available for pre-order across different formats through Voodoo Rhythm Records. For more information about The Monsters, visit their website.
