Providence’s ornery miscreants return with another stomping trek through misanthropic hardcore. Short. Heavy. Pissed. Peace Test drop a new LP *cough, cough … (technically Repercussion—by all legal standards or committee statutes—is an EP … I don’t actually care). Point being, Repercussion exists at its destined length, 12 songs in 12:30 minutes. This is Creepy Crawl glory showcasing fat riffs and a grimy bass sound. Words are futile if they are explaining idea without sound.
To help visualize the trudging sections cutting into spastic fast parts, manifest images of fists and petty vandalism and corporations collapsing. Vocals are perfectly growled, right in the sweet spot. And take “Egoist” for example, when examining the production. This an old one back from Collection in 2021 (from the 2018 Promo) and the crisp punch this version has is straight ahead and succinct like XPROCLAMATIONX but still nasty. “
Soft Spot” encapsulates feral enmity from the barks to the beat. (It also gets one of those dive bombs!). The minute long opener “Clear My Head” defines heavy with a thrash feel including an atmospheric dive bomb. Repercussion is gritty and gravel-y, nasty and gnarly—anti-social and confrontational hardcore from the gutters.
As far as rating a record like Repercussion, what do you aim for as a target? The record executes what it wants to accomplish. It highlights the attributes of what you from the band and/or genre. But as 90% of punk and hardcore reviews have to say, “It’s not breaking any new ground.” Repercussion is exemplary of this type of hardcore. Authenticity is the benchmark of quality. Peace Test play pissed ‘cuz they are genuinely pissed. The disgust is palpable in these minute-long ditties (seven under/five over one minute). I began to write selected songs, but deleted. Singling out one over another seemed insulting. Every track is savage.
