Toronto’s Safe To Say have released a new video for their heavy-hearted track, “Tangerine” (watch below). Produced and directed by the band themselves, along with Wyatt Clough, “Tangerine” depicts some of the very real and often tragic moments that come between being a teenager and finally growing up.
“A big part of bringing Down In The Dark to life was SideOneDummy Records giving us, as a band, as much creative freedom and control as we wanted. With this video we wanted to do the same,” explains singer/guitarist Brad Garcia. “‘Tangerine’ is about reaching that final point of adolescence, the transition into adulthood. We tried our best to show the nitty gritty parts of the high school experience while still making something fun that you’d want to watch again.”
Prior to the recording and subsequent release of Down In The Dark earlier this year, Garcia spent a year privately piecing together melodies on voice memos and scraps of paper, choosing not to share the songs with the band, even as they entered the studio. Though the writing process made recording more complicated, it also allowed Safe to Say’s creativity to flourish and ended up with corkscrewing melodies and songs that leave a lot of room to interpretation.
Growth seems to be a constant for Safe To Say, from their more pop-punk leaning split with Seaway (2012) to their first self-released full-length With Everything In Between (2013) and more recently, their foray into Brand New-inspired atmospheric alt-rock, Hiding Games (2015). As Garcia states, “Safe To Say is four people, who happen to grow and write music together. And, to me, that’s just rock and roll.”
