Swedish-based post-hardcore/screamo outfit WLOTS are approaching the release of their new album, Paperking, on September 30, and to give fans a taste of what to expect, they are sharing their new song and video, “Rooftop Nerves,” here at New Noise through IGTV.
WLOTS—Hannes Wijk (vocals, guitar, backing vocals, piano), Robert William-Olsson (guitar, backing vocals, percussion, sampling), Alexander Reinthal (vocals, bass, spoken word, backing vocals, percussion) and Jesper Sundell (drums)—created the album through an isolated, pandemic recording session in a small wooded cabin, featuring a backdrop of snarling pain, awareness, and gut-wrenching emotion, fitting for the recording conditions and the tumultuous times we are collectively facing.
“The album is a collection of sad musings about life lived in contempt of others, authoritative figures in particular, and trying to let go of that anger. Paperking is written from the perspective of the oppressor … someone whose claim to power is without warrant and unable to withstand challenge. We want the listener to despise this person as much as we do but at the same time recognize their humanity,” says Reinthal.
The 13 tracks explore a variety of themes, which WLOTS hope reaches listeners who have gone through similar experiences. “If you’ve struggled with depression, seek help. Therapists are like partners; find someone who you can trust, and don’t be afraid to switch it up if it doesn’t work out at first,” Reinthal concludes.
The new single,”Rooftop Nerves” specifically delves into how troubled people often find each other.
