An iconic, 80s pop staple that skyrocketed the band to stardom, The Go-Go’s Beauty And The Beat turns 40 today.

The Go-Gos

The band’s acclaimed, debut album contains some of The Go-Go’s biggest hits and famously launched the success of the new wave pop band. It reached number one on the Billboard Top LPs and Tape chart the year after its release, specifically helped by its two, main singles, “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat.”

The album only built its legacy following its release, ranking on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and “Our Lips Are Sealed” getting the cover treatment many times over, often acting as a staple for any 80s playlist. That song was also included as one of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll” by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In Pitchfork’s series revisiting and reviewing significant albums from the past, Quinn Moreland says the band helped to shape the future of rock ‘n’n roll, and music, for women specifically, “The Go-Go’s wrote and performed their own songs, songs about independence and desire and control. They shifted a paradigm and inspired a new generation of women—from the Bangles to Hole to Bikini Kill to Sleater-Kinney—to make noise on their own terms. The Go-Go’s never hid from where they came from, and they never apologized for where it took them.”
