After teasing the release on social media earlier this week, The Callous Daoboys unveiled their latest single—”Waco Jesus”—alongside its accompanying music video. The Atlanta-born sextet also announced their upcoming EP, God Smiles Upon The Callous Daoboys, out October 20, via MNRK Heavy and Modern Static Records.
If there’s one thing the Callous Daoboys excel at, it’s keeping listeners guessing. Last year’s LP, Celebrity Therapist, garnered praise for the bold way the band dance through a chaotic web of emotions and musical inspiration.
With the debut of “Waco Jesus,” The Callous Daoboys step into their own. According to the band’s vocalist, Carson Pace:
“In a way it feels like the band just started, even though we’ve been chipping away at it for the last six years. We want to be the defining band of this weirdo genre-swapping heavy music, where you can’t put it under an umbrella. I think what’s cool about it is it’s just immediately like, ‘Hey, fuck you, this is The Callous Daoboys!’”
Much like Celebrity Therapist, “Waco Jesus” takes you through a range of emotions as it dances through a chaotic web of musical inspiration—including plenty of moments to laugh throughout the track’s light-hearted music video, which finds the band hosting a pilot episode of a brand new ghost hunting series. But lyrically, the introspective track contemplates something much deeper. Pace explains:
“Waco Jesus is about insecurity, projecting that insecurity and not doing anything to solve it regardless of how people are telling you to NOT be insecure. It’s about being unable to take a compliment.”
“Waco Jesus” is the second track off The Callous Daoboy’s upcoming EP, which is currently available for preorder. It will be available to stream everywhere October 20.
