The project, formed in 2016 under a different name blossomed into the Seaholm we know and love today. Pat Ray, the Captain at the helm for 3 years and after facing a few lineup changes, drew in Kris Herrmann [Drums] and Austin Stawowczyk [Bass], originally just fans of the band. Filling in for shows and starting to feel how special the connection was during practices, this unique relationship to the songs from both sides made putting together “It’s Raining Outside” an intriguing and more familiar approach.
“There’s only so much that we can convey as a three piece and we put a lot of work in in the studio,” shares Stawowczyk. “[There were] lots of little overdubs and touches that just came out of this chemistry that we have together. I’m most excited for people to hear those versions of the songs because we’ve been sitting on those for so long. Even if you’ve caught our live show dozens of times, you’re going to hear things that we would never be able to replicate live.”
The group linked up with Tyler Floyd, yet another person very familiar with Seaholm. Some of the songs played the longcon in the band’s collective heart, materializing almost five years ago, revamped and rejuvenated, such as “Cough Syrup,” a now exponentially uptempo version than the original, which is still somehow played even faster live.
“Working with Tyler, who already has the shorthand of Pat, it was one of the most effortless experiences I’ve had putting together a record, shares Ray. “I’ve been recording files since I was 19. He’s grown as a producer as I’ve worked with them and that’s been fun; I love being the guinea pig.”
There is a lot going on in the world today and it’s tough to wrap our heads around how negatively drastic each new problem is. Luckily, it’s now so bad getting caught out in the rain thanks to Michigan’s little slice of positivity and promise in Seaholm.
“We’re taking a lot of our problems in life outside of the band and we’re working through it in a way that invites people to have fun, release energy, and release emotion. Hopefully, we’re not doing it in a way that’s encouraging more destructiveness, but hoping that people can play along with us and let it go rather than celebrate it.”
