Bay Area screamo greats Loma Prieta have been quiet since the release of the quartet’s last full-length, Self-Portrait in 2015. The dry spell comes to an end with “Continuum,” a ripper of a track that sees the band taking a relatively tempered vocal delivery fit to lyrics bemoaning the cyclical mundanity that most face every day. The band’s signature hardcore delivery rumbles through, building into noisy punk reminiscent of acts like Fugazi or Unwound.
Along with a new video, the track brings the announcement of a new, two-track EP titled Continuum b/w Fate out January 10, 2020 on Deathwish Inc. Like Loma Prieta’s last album, Continuum shows a willingness to blend other influences into the band’s fiery screamo. Though certainly a far cry from abandoning the worlds of hardcore and screamo, it’s a display of the group’s talent for crafting a sound unique in a crowded genre. Engineered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Oathbreaker), Continuum signals good things to come from Loma Prieta.
