Green Day frontman and all-round pop-punk legend Billie Joe Armstrong has released his YouTube covers series, No Fun Mondays, as a 14-track collection. He’s also confirmed he is NOT Fink, singer of The Network, just to clear that up.
No Fun Mondays features covers of classic rock and pop tracks by such artists as The Clash, John Lennon, Billy Bragg, Johnny Thunders, and The Bangles, all given the iconic melodic-punk Billie Joe sound.
The collection is out now via Reprise/Warner Records, and is available digitally across all streaming services, as well as on CD and vinyl. Limited edition baby blue colored vinyl will be available at U.S. independent music retailers.
Starting out in March on Green Day’s YouTube channel, No Fun Mondays was a way for Billie Joe to express his creativity, seen as he couldn’t tour the world as planned in support of the bands’ latest album, Father Of All…, released in February.
Billie Joe says:
“While we’ve all been in quarantine I’ve been reflecting on the things that matter the most in my life: family, friends, and, of course, music. I figure if we have to spend this time in isolation at least we can be alone together.”
Each song, released on consecutive Mondays, saw a home-recorded cover and DIY video, with Billie Joe performed his first quarantine cover on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” accompanied by his two sons as well as “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.
The series also includes a cover of the theme song from Tom Hanks’ 1995 film That Thing You Do!, in tribute to the song’s writer, Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger, who passed away from COVID-19 complications in April.
Green Day’s plans for this year will instead come to fruition in 2021, with the Hella Mega Tour, a nearly sold-out stadium tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer next summer, hitting venues across Europe, the U.K., and North America. Green Day will also be performing on their own solo tour.
On a completely unrelated note, The Network’s lead singer, Fink, recently hacked Billie Joe’s Instagram (The Network have been causing havoc across all of Green Day’s social media). Synth-wave otherworldly creatures, The Network released their Trans Am EP ahead of the release of their follow up to 2003’s Money Money 2020, Money Money Part 2: We Told Ya So!. Fink is DEFINITELY NOT Billie Joe, and the rest of the band are DEFINITELY NOT Green Day.
