Alberta, Canada pop punk band Nicolas Rage are sharing their new song and video, “The Wrong Way.” Check it out right now, premiering here at New Noise.

The quartet—comprised of Jeremy McLeod (vocals/guitar), Tim Wilson (drums), Mark Wojcicki (bass), and Aaron Matheson (guitar)—are eager to further take on the scene, having just signed to Revival Records in 2021. Nicolas Rage also just released their debut EP, Personal Party, back in March of this year.

McLeod chats more about the new video and track:

“‘The Wrong Way’ was written about attempting to battle drug addiction and mental illness on my own. Along with the struggles, it’s also a representation of how much I’ve grown with the process. I’ve learned to recognize the waves of emotions that come with it and know what it takes to get through it. The line ‘Doing the wrong thing, the right way so get up’ means that as long as you’re still fighting, you’re getting stronger. With that, you need to know you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. Even if it’s challenging, your path was meant to be traveled by you. Take things one step at a time.”

New Noise also caught up with McLeod to chat more about shooting the music video, the band’s new EP, and plans for the future.

What was the process like shooting a live music video? How was the EP release show?
We set things up about a month before the show, making sure we had multiple cameramen and letting them know what song to focus on. As for the experience, it made things feel more exciting. Having a camera follow us around really made things feel more hype. And the crowd was incredible, we sold out the venue for our EP release show and that feeling still stays with us ’til this day. I think it always will.

What was the writing/recording process like for the EP?
We took a new approach to writing with this EP. During the pandemic, we saw the opportunity to learn how to record our songs and take them from with the ability to properly play them back. Once we got the songs as close as we could get them, we brought them to our producer/engineer James Banks, who’s like the fifth member of Rage.

From there, we captured the tones and mix we wanted to achieve. We came up with the concept early 2019, having the theme of living day to day struggling with mental illness. We wanted the music to reflect how we put on a mask, like everything is fine. So we create the instrumentals to have high energy, with the lyrics representing what’s happening on the inside. We really feel as though we captured this effect as we planned.

Do you have any tours planned or shows coming up? And do you have anymore releases planned?
Our next show is May 21 at The Starlite Room in Edmonton, Alberta. We also are in the midst of finishing a Western Canadian tour coming up in August 2022. As for releases, nothing has been solidified yet, but we are already working on new songs to fit our next concept EP.

Is there anything you’d like to add?
We as a band just want to be seen as people who struggle as well, and that none of us are alone with that. We hope that our music can bring some comfort to people who need it. As much as it brings us comfort knowing our music has meaning.
