You’ve really got to hand it to Iron Maiden; not only have they just released their first-ever double LP sixteen studio albums into their career, but they managed to pull it off despite singer Bruce Dickinson’s recent cancerous tumor – all without missing a single beat.
“If Eternity Should Fail” starts off the album with a bit of an unusual intro for a Maiden record but eventually kicks things into high gear, becoming the first of many epic pieces on Souls. “Speed of Light” quickly follows, and despite being the first single, definitely sticks out as one of the weaker tracks (though the game-themed video is undoubtedly fun to watch) on Souls. “Tears of a Clown,” an apparent homage of sorts for late comedian Robin Williams, adds a touch of class to things as well. The Book of Souls probably won’t go down in history as Maiden’s best effort ever, but it’s definitely worthy of putting alongside any of their most classic material.
